We had the chance to shoot with the Calumet Cambo WDS but with a twist; using the digital magazine from the Hasselblad H3DII-31 DSLR and shooting with the Schneider Digitar 35mm lens (f/5.6, 102 degrees of coverage.)

How is that possible you ask?

Rumor has it that the Hasselblad digital magazine can only be used on the H3D system, but this configuration seems to put that in the bin after a real-world, hands-on test. We were able to assemble the Cambo WDS in a few minutes and after using the included Kapture Group 2-way release (commonly used by digital backs to send a "wake up" signal prior to capture,) discovered the Hasselblad did not need this - and we switched to a regular flash-sync cable connecting the lens to the flashsync "In" port on the left side of the H3DII-31 digital magazine.

Tethered operation with the MacBook Pro was flawless after we selected the camera type as "flashsync" in the Phocus camera control tool. Designed for digital, the Cambo WDS has rise/fall capabilities in addition to shift for multi-exposure stitching applications that make it ideal for capturing interior and exterior architectural images.

Then, we unplugged the computer and went untethered to simulate field capture conditions or when it is not feasible for a laptop to be around. First, we connected the ImageBank II - a 100GB external rugged drive and power source - and the images were faithfully recorded as quickly as we could re-cock the lens.

Afterwards, we shot to the SanDisk Extreme Pro 16GB CF card using the HD+ FireWire power source (this provides power over FireWire 400 to the H3DII-31 digital magazine) and captured several frames.

All in a days work

This configuration is an example of the flexibility of the Hasselblad H3D platform providing photographers with the best tools to create stunning imagery. Requirements are an "H"-type mount and flashsync cable from the lens. Additionally, the Rollei Lens S controller is supported for digital lenses and the low-tech, but effective "pinhole" mode is supported as well. Separately from the H3DII, Alpa has demonstrated the new CFV-39 in a similar configuration using the Hasselblad "V" mount.
